Counter-terrorism officers to visit Maziotis in hospital for deposition

Counter-terrorism officers are to visit Revolutionary Struggle leader Nikos Maziotis in Evangelismos Hospital on Friday to get the leftist guerrilla’s first deposition since his arrest in central Athens on Wednesday after a bloody shootout.

Maziotis remains under armed guard at the hospital where he underwent surgery for a shoulder wound sustained during the exchange of fire with police in Monastiraki on Wednesday.

Late on Thursday police raided several apartments in Exarchia, Pangrati and in Voula, south of Athens, in a continuing effort to find the terror group’s weapons caches.

A probe by counter-terrorism officers is said to be focusing on Maroussi, north of Athens, where Maziotis has been caught on camera boarding the electric railway (ISAP) on several occasions. A search of the 42-year-old on his arrest produced a receipt from a clothes store in The Mall, a shopping complex in Maroussi.

An investigation is also under way in Grammatiko, eastern Attica, where Maziotis is said to have been seen getting off an inter-city bus.

The police is expected to publish a photograph of Maziotis later in the day in a bid to seek information from the public that could lead to the arrest of his accomplices or to the discovery of the guerrilla organization’s hideouts.
