Tax official, accountant caught bribing 80-year-old over business closure

A tax inspector and an accountant were arrested on Thursday on suspicion that they had asked for a bribe to help wind up a company.

The 80-year-old man registered as the firm’s manager informed police that, via the accountant, the official from the Psychico tax office in Athens had demanded 30,000 euros in cash in order to help him resolve his tax issues.

According to police, the 80-year-old handed the money in marked bills to his accountant, 53, who then passed the cash over to the inspector, aged 57.

At that point members of the police’s internal affairs department arrested both suspects.

The tax official faces charges of accepting a bribe, breach of duty and attempted fraud.

The account will be charged with bribing an official and attempted fraud.
