As Iglesias sings, inspectors count
Usually accustomed to stuffy offices, Finance Ministry inspectors were sent to Psarou Beach on Myconos on Wednesday night to ensure that the restaurant where veteran Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias and popular local singer Antonis Remos were performing declared all its takings.
The Finance Ministry said that Nammos Restaurant had a turnover of around 2 million euros on the night, with the state set to take some 500,000 euros in value-added tax. Inspectors arrived early to conduct a stock take. They used the results of this audit at the end of the night to check that all the food and drink sold had been registered at the till.
Officials also positioned themselves next to the restaurant’s till for the duration of the evening to ensure there was no scope for tax evasion, the ministry said.
