Cameras put up outside feared terrorist targets
Greek authorities have started installing surveillance cameras at guard posts outside police precincts and other facilities feared to be possible terrorist targets, Kathimerini understands.
According to a well-informed source, in recent weeks technical teams have set up cameras at guard posts outside police precincts in the central Athens district of Exarchia and Nea Ionia, northern Athens, as well as outside the Attica Aliens Bureau on Petrou Ralli Street.
The installation of surveillance cameras began in January, shortly after an armed attack on the Athens home of the German ambassador to Greece and following the disappearance during a prison furlough of November 17 convict Christodoulos Xeros. That process was frozen following an appeal by the union representing police guards who complained that the cameras were monitoring the movements of police guards rather than the surrounding vicinity.
Although a verdict on the police guards’ appeal to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority is pending, the installation of cameras has resumed, according to sources.
Xeros remains at large and police have not ruled out the possibility of a revenge attack by members of Revolutionary Struggle following the arrest of its leader Nikos Maziotis in mid-July in a shootout in central Athens.
