Police net ring of violent robbers

A ring of violent robbers believed to be behind 12 armed raids on OPAP betting shops, cell phone retailers and courier firms across Attica has been broken, police sources said on Monday, noting that five suspected members have been arrested.

The gang is believed to be behind a January 2013 raid on a Vodafone branch in Kaisariani, eastern Athens, during which robbers fired their guns at workers, hitting two in the legs.

Members of the same racket opened fire on officers of the motorcycle-riding DIAS police unit in Ilisia, eastern Athens, in April last year, sources said.

In the latter incident, the suspects shot at police officers when they were stopped for an inspection. They caused no injuries and fled the scene. The ring is believed to have netted some 200,000 euros.
