Eight tons lost in cheese theft

More than 8 tons of cheese, worth 64,000 euros, from Naxos has been stolen after thieves tricked a truck driver into delivering the consignment to them rather than a customer in Romania, police revealed on Thursday.

The driver said that he received a call from a man pretending to work for the firm that had ordered the cheese, instructing him to meet him near the Thessaloniki-Katerini national road. There, another three men unloaded the 8.2-ton shipment onto another truck. The cheese did not arrive at its destination and authorities were alerted.

Officers are seeking a 44-year-old man and several accomplices.
