Education Ministry says almost 180,000 tertiary students ‘stagnant’

A total of 178,458 people have failed to complete their tertiary education studies but are still registered as students, the Education Ministry said on Friday.

According to the ministry, 139,175 students are registered at the country’s universities. Of these, 129,008 are to be immediately scrubbed from the registers.

Another 39,283 students, who the government is referring to as “stagnant,” are registered at technical colleges (TEI). Of these, 23,811 are going to be removed from the institution’s lists. The remaining students will be given the right to take part in the next two exam periods. If they fail to do so, they too will be taken off the registers.
