French hiker found dead on Crete close to wife’s body
A 64-year-old Frenchman has been found dead on Crete a few hours after his wife’s body was discovered during a search operation to locate the two hikers.
The man’s body was found on Monday morning by rescuers at a small church between the mountainous villages of Loutra and Anopoli. It was some 700 meters from where his 62-year-old wife was found dead on Sunday.
Authorities believe the couple suffered a fall during their hike on Friday and that the woman was unable to move, while her husband went on to get help but only made it as far as the church.
The owner of the rooms where the holidaymakers were staying notified the police on Saturday, when he saw the couple had not returned from its hike.
