Attack on gay couple in Athens leaves one man needing surgery

A man had his ankle broken in three places in the Athens neighborhood of Pangrati early on Saturday in what it is thought to be at least the fifth homophobic attack in the capital this summer.

A gay couple were attacked in a park by 10 to 15 men with shaved heads and wearing black t-shirts, according to Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper. According to the victims, their attackers were aged between 25 and 30.

One of the gay men has to go undergo surgery on his ankle as a result of the injuries he suffered.

The incident is being investigated by the Pangrati police precinct.
