Faliro revamp set to get EU funding

A government official insisted Tuesday that the planned revamp of a 60-hectare stretch of Athens’s southern coast, the Faliro Delta, would not be delayed, noting that European Union structural funding had been secured for the project.

In comments to state channel NERIT, Stratos Simopoulos, general secretary of public works at the Infrastructure Ministry, said the project will get EU funding but did not say how much of the 230-million-euro budget this would cover. He said a tender will be issued in the fall with construction likely to begin by May.

A series of delays had led to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which is building a cultural center next to the area to be revamped, complaining earlier this year.
