Dozens of migrants intercepted in the Aegean

A wooden boat carrying 138 undocumented immigrants foundered on rocks off the eastern coast of Symi, in the southeastern Aegean, early on Friday, in an apparent attempt to avoid an inspection by a Latvian coast guard vessel participating in a European Union maritime security exercise in the area.

Coast guard officials on Symi detained the migrants who were said to be in good health.

Meanwhile in the eastern Aegean, off the coast of Samos, a vessel belonging to Frontex, the EU’s border monitoring agency, intercepted seven migrants in a rubber dinghy.

On Thursday night another 37 would-be migrants, and their two suspected smugglers, were intercepted off the coast of Rhodes.
