Traveling on public transport in Athens gets cheaper

Commuters will pay 20 cents less for tickets allowing them to use all modes of public transportation in Athens as of Monday, though they will be valid for 70 minutes rather than 90 as was the case previously.

The new ticket, priced at 1.20 euros, allows passengers to use the capital’s fixed-track network, buses and trolley buses for a period of 70 minutes.

The old 1.40-euro tickets will remain valid through the end of March.

Existing one-year passes for buses, trolley buses and the tram, priced at 200 euros, will be valid until the date of expiration, while commuters will also have the option of upgrading them to include all modes of transport. Holders of 450-euro passes, which allow for travel on all modes for one year, will also be able to keep using them until their expiration.

The reduction in the ticket price is part of an ongoing overhaul of the public transportation system introduced by the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA), henceforth named Transport for Athens (www.tfa.gov.gr).

The plan to improve the capital’s transport network also includes changes to bus routes so that they provide more connections to metro and ISAP electric railway stations as well as the inauguration of new routes in areas that receive irregular services.
