Sanitary landfill for Ilia in Peloponnese given green light
The Environment Ministry on Monday approved the final draft of a tender for a sanitary landfill to serve the region of Ilia in the western Peloponnese.
Ilia has long been one of Greece’s biggest offenders in terms of failing to abide by waste management regulations, managing only to restrict the number of illegal landfills currently operating to five as several municipal authorities have resisted shutdown directives and continued to use unregulated dumps.
The new landfill will be built to EU specifications on a budget of 40 million euros in the area of Triantafyllia. The project is expected to take at least 12 months to complete, raising concerns about how municipalities will manage until the unit is constructed if the current five illegal landfills are shut down.
