Kapeleris faces magistrates in connection with Lagarde list

The head of Greece’s Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) when Giorgos Papaconstantinou was finance minister in 2010, Yiannis Kapeleris, was granted unconditional release on Tuesday after defending himself before investigating magistrates on charges of breach of trust in connection with the so-called Lagarde list.

According to sources, Kapeleris told magistrates that he never received the list containing the names of 2,062 Greeks with deposit accounts at a Geneva branch of HSBC and that Papaconstantinou only asked him to probe the tax details of 10 people from the list.

His successor and co-defendant, Yiannis Diotis, is to face magistrates on the same charges on Wednesday.
