Athens provides political support for ISIS fight

Greece said Friday that it is willing to provide non-military backing to the group of countries that is willing to take on the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

“We welcome and express our political support for the creation of a global alliance of states that will coordinate the international efforts against the Islamic State, a terrorist organization whose activities have caused the outrage and unanimous condemnation of the whole civilized world,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Following the NATO summit in Wales last week a number of countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Turkey, Australia and Canada agreed to join forces with the United States to combat the extremist group.

“We express our solidarity with the Iraqi government, with the Christians and all of the distressed ethnic and religious communities in the region that have suffered from the base and barbaric actions of the Islamic Caliphate, an extremist jihadist organization that must be obliterated.”
