Carer denies abusing disabled woman in Kallithea

A 77-year-old Russian woman was remanded in custody on Wednesday on suspicion of abusing a wheelchair-bound 36-year-old woman she was caring for in an apartment in Kallithea, southern Athens.

The woman was arrested earlier this month following a police raid on the apartment after neighbors complained that the 36-year-old was being left on the balcony by her carer.

The 77-year-old denied mistreating the woman she had cared for over the last 14 years, saying that she had moved her to the balcony during the summer to escape the heat in the house.

The carer added that she too slept on the balcony.

The 77-year-old also told a magistrate that she had come into possession of the apartment because the 36-year-old handed her the property rights as a token of gratitude.

The carer faces charges of attempted murder.

Her 55-year-old nephew was released on bail.
