Greece condemns execution of French hostage in Algeria

Greece has condemned the execution of a French hostage in Algeria by militants linked to the Islamic State jihadi group.

“We condemn in the most unequivocal manner and express our profound sadness and outrage at the barbaric and inhuman execution,” said a statement by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

Herve Gourdel, a 55-year-old mountaineering guide was beheaded 24 hours after an ultimatum was given to France to halt attacks in Iraq.

“We assure the French government that Greece will remain a firm ally in the fight against terrorism,” the statement said.
