Police ID dismembered, charred body found in Athens dumpster

Police on Friday were questioning the family and friends of an 85-year-old man whose body was found dismembered and burned in a dumpster in the western Athenian suburb of Aegaleo on Wednesday.

The man was identified through dental records by a coroner late on Thursday and police ascertained that the 85-year-old Aegaleo resident had been reported missing by his daughter.

His body was found by firefighters in the early hours of Wednesday after they were called to extinguish a blaze in a garbage dumpster on a street corner.

The body was found in two halves. The top half was inside the bin and badly charred and the bottom half lay on the ground nearby.

The arms had been severed at the wrists in an apparent attempt by the perpetrators to stop police from identifying the victim by using his fingerprints.
