Soccer fan succumbs to injuries; ministry suspends weekend events

A 47-year-old soccer fan who was undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Athens after sustaining serious head injuries during a scuffle at a soccer match on the island of Crete earlier this month died early Monday morning.

Costas Katsoulis, had been initially taken to a hospital in Iraklio after a fight broke out in the stands at a third-division game between local side Irodotos and Ethnikos of Piraeus.

The victim, an Ethnikos supporter, was initially diagnosed as suffering from a brain haemorrhage after having an aneurism and was airlifted to Athens.

Four Cretan men initially charged with attempted manslaughter now face charges of manslaughter. All three are in pretrial custody, while a fourth has been released on bail.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture and Sports on Monday announced that all team sports scheduled to take place over the weekend were being suspended as a sign of respect.
