3 ELA suspects to stay in jail

A panel of senior judges yesterday rejected pleas for release from custody from all three Revolutionary Popular Struggle (ELA) terrorism suspects held in pre-trial custody since early February. At the same time, lawyers representing the last of the 19 November 17 defendants to be arrested, said their client had a good chance of walking free on bail. The Council of Appeals Court Judges decided to renew for another six months the pre-trial detention orders for Angeletos Kanas, 52, Constantinos Agapiou, 56, and Irini Athanassaki, 48, describing all three as «dangerous» criminals who might commit new offenses if freed. The fourth ELA suspect, alleged group leader Christos Tsigaridas, 64, was released on bail on May 23 due to ill health. Meanwhile, lawyers representing N17 suspect Anestis Papanastasiou, 41, yesterday appealed for his release, arguing that his detention order expired over a month ago without being renewed.
