Policeman admits to murder of his cousin-in-law

A 27-year-old policeman has confessed to killing his cousin by marriage, authorities said on Saturday.

The officer, who has been suspended from duty since February 2013 for extortion, was arrested on Friday, a day after he allegedly stabbed to death his cousin in the latter’s home in the Piraeus suburb of Kallipoli.

Some sources suggested that the victim, who owned a betting agency, owed the policeman large amounts of money and that the stabbing occured during an argument over the settlement of the debt.

The officer had been found guilty last year of extorting money from a Pakistani shopkeeper in Piraeus in exchange for protection.
