Korydallos prison conditions to be investigated

Supreme Court prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani on Wednesday ordered a probe into claims by inmates at Attica’s Korydallos Prison that detention conditions are substandard and conducive to the spread of diseases.

Koutzamani asked Piraeus prosecutor Evangelos Zacharis to probe claims of an increasing number of cases of tuberculosis among inmates.

Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou and Alternate Health Minister Leonidas Grigorakos visited Korydallos’s hospital on Wednesday and were assured that measures have been taken to avert the spread of diseases.

The ministries decided meanwhile to transfer all HIV+ inmates to a single prison wing and to recruit an additional 39 medical staff for Greek prisons, including five for Korydallos.
