Samaras orders deputy minister to resign over parliamentary comments

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Thursday ordered Deputy Education Minister Giorgos Stylios to resign over comments made in Parliament in a dispute with Greek Communist Party (KKE) deputy Liana Kanelli (photo) earlier in the day.

The incident occurred in the House following a question by Kanelli regarding child malnutrition. Commenting on the deputy minister’s remarks, Kanelli said his response reminded her of Marie Antoinette and the “let them eat cake” phrase attributed to her.

Reacting to Kanelli’s comments Stylios said the deputy was seeking to “turn me into Kasidiaris,” in reference to an incident which occurred during a live television show when Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris threw a glass of water at SYRIZA’s Rena Dourou, now Attica governor, before slapping Kanelli over an argument regarding Greek oils reserves.

Stylios later publicly apologized for his comments.
