Probe ordered into security at Olympiakos-PAO match
Believing that the necessary security measures were not in place, Supreme Court prosecutor Athanasios Akritidis on Thursday ordered an investigation into the behavior of Olympiakos fans at a recent soccer match with fierce rivals Panathinaikos.
Olympiakos won the home game 1-0 but Akritidis deemed that the large amount of flares, smokebombs and firecrackers thrown onto the pitch before the game put the safety of players and fans at the Karaiskaki Stadium at risk.
Akritidis noted that there were no such problems at a Champions League game at the stadium a few days earlier.
He asked the Piraeus prosecutor’s office to examine whether club staff or supporters’ club representatives could be held culpable.
