Coalition leaders face tough civil servant layoff decision

Greece’s coalition leaders are likely to have to take a decision in the next few days on how the country will reach the target of dismissing another 5,500 employees from the public sector by the end of the year.

Sources told Kathimerini that Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is meeting resistance from cabinet colleagues and will probably have to refer the matter to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Deputy Premier Evangelos Venizelos for a final decision.

Some 2,000 administrative staff, 1,800 contract workers, 850 Transport Ministry employees and civil servants found guilty of offenses are set to make up the 5,500 the government has to find.
