Political parties condemn arson attack on newspaper
Parties across the political spectrum on Friday condemned an arson attack that destroyed the headquarters of the free weekly Athens Voice newspaper in the central Athens neighborhood of Exarchia.
“Neither the press nor democracy in this country can be intimidated by terrorist attacks of this sort,” government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi said after a group calling itself Anti-Capitalist Action claimed responsibility for the attack which took place in the early hours of Thursday.
In a symbolic gesture Culture Minister Costas Tasoulas on Friday visited the damaged offices and purchased a subscription for the publication.
“We condemn the attack… which is also directed against freedom of the press,” leftist SYRIZA said.
PASOK, Democratic Left and the Communist Party (KKE) all issued similar statements.
Athens Voice will be back on the stands next Thursday.
