Four out of five found guilty over Ileia forest fires
A Patra court on Tuesday found four out of five defendants facing charges over forest fires that broke out in Ileia in the Peloponnese in August 2007 guilty. The blazes claimed the lives of 36 people.
Former Ileia prefect Charalambos Kafyras, former Zacharo mayor Pantazis Chronopoulos, Palaiochori resident Sophia Nikolopoulou and Minthi forest ranger Panayotis Tsouras, were all found guilty. Meanwhile, the former chief of the Krestaina Fire Department, Nikos Michalopoulos, was acquitted.
The court was expected to hand sentences to the four defendants.
