Four handed 10-year prison terms in Ileia forest fires trial

A Patra court on Tuesday sentenced each of the four defendants found guilty in the Ileia forest fires trial to ten years in prison. The blazes, which broke out in the Peloponnesian region in August 2007, claimed the lives of 36 people.

Former Ileia prefect Charalambos Kafyras, former Zacharo mayor Pantazis Chronopoulos, Palaiochori resident Sophia Nikolopoulou and Minthi forest ranger Panayotis Tsouras, were all found guilty on Tuesday, while the former chief of the Krestaina Fire Department, Nikos Michalopoulos, was acquitted by the court.
