Ex-Thessaloniki mayor’s second graft trial put off until March

A second corruption trial involving Ex-Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos was postponed until March 16 next year on Monday.

Papgeorgopoulos, already serving a prison sentence for embezzlement, was due to be tried with 16 others in connection to some 1 million euros that was found to be missing from municipal coffers.

Monday’s trial was postponed after one of the suspect’s lawyers was unable to attend court due to illness.

The former mayor is currently serving a 12-year sentence for the embezzlement of another 17.9 million euros from Thessaloniki Municipality.

He has appealed this ruling.
