Nicosia criticizes UN Secretary General over Cyprus
Nicosia has criticized UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for failing to condemn Turkey’s violation of Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Speaking to state broadcaster RIK, Cyprus government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides criticized the UN chief for “maintaining an equal distance” between the two sides, adding that the Security Council ought to keep a clear stand in cases of sovereign rights’ violations.
Anastasiades recently sent a letter to Ban Ki-moon to complain over Turkey’s recent moves in the region.
Peace talks between the two sides, Christodoulides said, will only resume after Turkey withdraws from Cyprus’s EEZ and recognizes the island’s sovereign rights.
