Traffic accidents third cause of death in Greece, seminar hears

Greece has one of the highest traffic accident rates in Europe, according to data presented on Monday at a seminar in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, by the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace together with the Hellenic Institute of Transport (IMET/EKETA).

Romania, Poland and Latvia were also shown to be high on the list, the conference was told.

“Traffic accidents are estimated to be the third cause of death after heart disease and cancer,” said Thessaloniki traffic police chief Theodoros Tyrekidis, however adding that the number of road fatalities in Greece had been in steady decline over the past 10 years.
