Prosecutor charges 17 over harassment of stadium opponents

The Athens first instance prosecutor’s office issued charges on Tuesday against unknown individuals who have allegedly been harassing the 17 residents of Nea Philadelphia in northern Athens who have appealed against AEK soccer club’s new stadium being constructed there.

The prosecutor’s office took the action after around 30 motorcycle-riding assailants caused damage to one of the residents’ cars on Sunday. It was the latest of several incidents in which the signatories of the appeal have been harassed.

AEK condemned the latest incident but the club has come under criticism for publishing the appeal in full, including the 17 residents’ names and addresses, on its website. The appeal is due to be heard on March 6 next year.
