More flooding expected in northern Greece

After nearly a week of heavy rainfall, civil protection authorities in northern Greece on Wednesday warned that the Ardas River is at risk of breaking its banks due to flooding at the Ivaylovgrad Dam in neighboring Bulgaria.

The Evros River has also swelled to dangerous levels and residents and farmers throughout the area are advised not to approach the river and to remove as much machinery and livestock as possible from the immediate vicinity.

An evacuation plan is in place should this become necessary, the authorities said.
