Poll gives SYRIZA clear lead

A new poll showed leftist SYRIZA opposition to have inched forward to 28 percent, leaving conservative New Democracy into second place at 21.9 percent. Coalition partners PASOK are down to 3.6 percent.

The survey conducted by Palmos for TVXS website, showed neofascist Golden Dawn at 5.6 percent, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) at 4.7, the centrist Potami party at 4.3, and Independent Greeks at 3.4 percent.

Antarsya is at 1.7 percent and ultranationalist LAOS at 1.1., meaning that they would not win enough support to make it into Parliament. The poll found 12.6 percent are undecided.

The poll comes as the first of possibly three presidential ballots takes place on Wednesday evening, with the government expecting its candidate, Stavros Dimas, to receive at least 161 of 300 MPs’ votes, which will be well short of the 200 needed to be elected but a basis for the coalition to work from for the final ballot on December 29, when 180 votes will be required.
