Probe into Thessaloniki municipal corruption targets accountants
Thessaloniki-based corruption prosecutor Argyris Dimopoulos on Thursday ordered a preliminary investigation into whether any of the chartered accountants who had been responsible for overseeing the coffers of the northern port’s municipal authorities between 1998 and 2004 should face criminal charges for embezzlement or mismanagement of funds.
The probe comes as former Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, who is serving a 12-year prison sentence for the embezzlement of nearly 18 million euros in municipal funding, is to face new charges over another 1.1-million-euro hole in the city’s coffers.
