Courts provide names of judges to try ex-minister

The Supreme Court and Council of State provided Parliament Speaker Vangelis Meimarakis on Friday with a list from which the names of the judges that will preside over the special court for ex-Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou (photo) will be drawn.

The Supreme Court provided the names of 35 judges and nine deputy prosecutors, while the Council of State gave the names of 57 judges.

Parliament’s legal experts will approve a final short list before the draw is made to pick the 13 judges and six replacement justices that will try Papaconstantinou in connection to the alleged doctoring of the Lagarde list of depositors.

Unless there are snap general elections, Papaconstantinou will stand before a special court by February 11 to answer charges that he tampered with the list, which contained the names of more than 2,000 Greeks with deposits at the Geneva branch of HSBC, in order to remove the names of three relatives.
