Six Greeks and a Syrian suspected of running a migrant smuggling ring were questioned by a prosecutor on the island of Zakynthos on Saturday and face criminal charges.
The suspects were arrested after a month-long operation during which the coast guard and the police closely monitored their activities. Five of the suspects were arrested while transporting 30 undocumented migrants, thought to be from Syria, in a truck to the Ionian island’s southeastern coast late on Thursday.
The migrants told investigators they had been promised passage to Italy. The other two suspects were arrested on the beach where they were waiting for the truck.
