Dead Rhodes guard had been tortured

Authorities on the southeast Aegean island of Rhodes were investigating over the weekend after a 60-year-old security guard was found dead, with his body bearing multiple marks of violence and torture, according to local newspaper reports.

The victim, allegedly a Ghanan national, was found dead at the boat dealership in the island’s Karakonero area where he worked as a security guard by a Pakistani colleague who was supposed to start his shift at 11 p.m. on Friday.

Police said the man, whose name has not been made public, had been beaten, with his hands tied with a rope and a piece of bedsheet around his neck. The cause of death was not immediately clear. Authorities said the perpetrators may have tortured the victim to compel him to disclose the location of cash or other valuable items.

According to the reports, the perpetrators unsuccessfully tried to break into two safes located on the first floor of the store.

Police were examining CCTV footage from the site while forensic experts, dispatched from Athens, were carrying out an examination of the crime scene.
