Five people were detained in central Athens following scuffles between police and protestors who had formed a human chain outside the Ianos bookstore to demonstrate against its owner’s decision to open on Sundays.
The local bookstore employees’ association called for the protest as stores opened for the third Sunday in the row. Ianos issued a statement slamming the union for singling out the bookstore when other shops selling books also opened on Sunday.
Ianos said it was simply complying with the government’s decision for shops to open. “Nobody [from the government] asked the management or employees of Ianos,” said the bookstore, which is located on Stadiou Street.
