In his final New Year’s message as president of the republic, Karolos Papoulias called for Greece’s political parties to show unity.
“National unity is necessary for success,” he said.
“Political consensus and understanding on the major issues are vital for there to be progress. A united front will strengthen Greece’s argument and its negotiating position,” the outgoing president said.
Papoulias is due to remain in his position until a new Parliament is formed after the January 25 national elections and MPs vote for a new head of state.
