Piraeus metro moving ahead but tram is lagging

The Athens metro extension to Piraeus is expected to reach the suburb of Nikaia in May, the company in charge of the project, Attiko Metro, said, adding that 30 percent has been completed and work will resume in mid-January, following a break for the holidays.

According to the company, the project is more or less on schedule, with progress being made on the stations at Aghia Varvara, Korydallos and Maniatika. At the Piraeus port station, efforts are focused on the diversion of a central sewerage line and on excavations after archaeological finds were discovered during digging.

Artifacts have also been found at the Panepistimio site, holding up progress there.

Unlike the metro, the extension of the tram from the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) in Neo Faliro to Piraeus is significantly behind schedule, with Attiko Metro saying that it has adjusted the timeline for completion in February 2016 rather than the second half of this year.
