Municipal worker, civil engineer held on bribery charges in Macedonia
A municipal employee and a civil engineer were to face a prosecutor in central Macedonia on Thursday for allegedly seeking a bribe from a local businessman in exchange for helping to erase a fine.
The employee imposed the penalty, of 13,832 euros, following a recent inspection of the businessman’s premises which the latter had extended without a license.
In the days that followed, the employee allegedly sought a 2,000-euro payment from the businessman, in person and via the civil engineer, promising in return to annul the fine.
After a series of telephone calls, a meeting was set up for Wednesday night and the civil engineer was arrested while receiving the 2,000 euros in marked bills from the businessman.
Officers subsequently apprehended the municipal worker.
