Prosecutor to probe claim of phone-tapping near party offices

An investigation has been launched into a report by a Greek daily newspaper claiming that it had found numerous “suspicious” devices installed near the headquarters of major political parties that may have been used to listen into telephone conversations.

Ta Nea on Tuesday said it had used a device scanner in the areas around New Democracy’s Syngrou Avenue offices near Athens’s southern coast, and around the downtown areas of Koumoundourou Square, where SYRIZA’s headquarters are located, and Exarchia, home of PASOK. The device, the report said, picked up numerous “extremely suspicious events” over the two-week period that the scans were conducted, with Ta Nea suggesting that there may be special systems installed to illegally tap into telephone calls.

According to Naftemporiki daily, a prosecutor has ordered a probe into the claims.
