Police data for 2014 show slump in some offenses

Official police figures released on Wednesday pointed to a significant drop in crime last year with homicides down by a quarter and a sharp reduction in burglaries and thefts, though there was a spike in drug-related offenses.

Data from last year published on the police’s website yesterday showed homicides down by 25.5 percent, robberies down by 22.7 percent, burglaries down by 7.8 percent and vehicle thefts down by 13.2 percent compared to 2013.

However an additional 555 drug-related offenses and an additional 412 cases of forgery took place, according to the new figures.

Public Order Minister Vassilis Kikilias hailed the findings, saying they represented “a significant step toward improving citizens’ everyday safety.”
