Minister withdraws decision for nurses to issue prescriptions
Health Minister Makis Voridis on Thursday withdrew a ministerial decision he had issued earlier in the week allowing nurses to write prescriptions for some basic medicines if they are treating patients at their homes.
Voridis went back on the measure after the Athens Medical Association argued that he was putting patients’ lives in danger.
The Health Ministry said that the decision was being withdrawn to allow for further consultation.
Doctors applauded the move and stressed their respect for nurses.
“We insist, though, that it is not possible to substitute the role of the doctor,” said the Athens Medical Association in a statement.
