Eleven Thessaloniki municipal employees suspected of embezzlement
Eleven employees at the central service of the Municipality of Thessaloniki may face criminal charges for money laundering as a probe continues into the embezzlement of 17.9 million euros from municipal coffers, for which a former mayor and treasurer have already been convicted.
The suspects worked at the Municipality of Thessaloniki from 2000-08, the period during which ex-Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos (photo) and former treasurer Panayiotis Saxonis were in office.
The probe into their accounts found a total of 1.7 million euros that were unaccounted for, leading investigators to believe that they were involved in the massive embezzlement.
