Zoe Constantopoulou elected Greek parliament speaker
SYRIZA’s Zoe Constantopoulou was on Friday elected as Greece’s second female parliamentary speaker, with a record number of 235 votes.
“Parliament cannot be the place where scandals go to die,” Constantopoulou said in her inauguration speech immediately after the ballot.
Before the ballot, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and alternate Minister of International Economic Relations Euclid Tsakalotos were sworn in as lawmakers, taking a civil oath.
The two were absent from Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony because of an official visit to Germany.
