Serial rapist given 11.5 years in prison

A Thessaloniki court on Thursday sentenced a 31-year-old man who faced multiple charges of attempted rape against local women to 11-and-a-half years in prison.

The court found him guilty on eight counts of rape and two counts of lewd behavior.

The term would have been longer but judges acknowledged the fact that he had no previous record.

The 31-year-old was returned to custody immediately after the trial despite a proposal by the prosecutor that he be granted conditional release pending his appeal hearing.

The court heard that the man singled out women leaving bars or clubs late at night and attacked them.

He admitted to four of the 10 assaults attributed to him and claimed to have psychological problems.
