Law being drafted allowing same-sex cohabitation contracts

The Justice Ministry is drafting a law that will allow same-sex couples to enter into a cohabitation agreement that will grant parties the same rights afforded to heterosexual couples joined by contract, Kathimerini understands.

The cohabitation contract allows the settlement of inheritance, child custody, wealth and social security issues between couples who are in a committed relationship but not joined by marriage.

Greece’s failure to apply the same law to same-sex couples has already landed the country in hot water with the European Court of Human Rights as it is the only country in the bloc, along with Lithuania, to exclude same-sex unions.

Cohabitation agreements, introduced in 2009, have been gaining popularity since the start of the crisis, with 1,566 such contracts drawn in 2014 compared to just 161 in their first year.
