Police seek would-be robbers in Athens neighborhood after exchange of fire in street
Police were seeking two gunmen after a failed robbery in a supermarket in the Athens neighborhood of Petralona on Monday.
According to initial reports, the would-be robbers burst into the supermarket and told the cashiers to empty their registers with an accomplice outside the store as a lookout. However, one of the employees activated the store’s silent alarm, alerting police who sent members of the force’s DIAS rapid-response unit to the scene.
Two of the robbers managed to escape while the third was arrested. There was an exchange of fire between the two gunmen who fled on foot and police but there were no reports of injuries.
Additional police officers were dispatched to the scene and were seeking the fugitive gunmen.
